ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) [AINSLEE'S.] Ink and wash on artist board. 1903.
12 3/4x10 1/4 inches, 32 1/2x26 cm.
Condition A. Matted and framed.
The original artwork for a magazine cover in which two women sit in the boughs of small tree surrounded by a spray of flowers. It appeared in print in May 1904. Renowned Mucha scholar and specialist Robert Haas writes, "the faces are painted with incredible delicacy and Mucha's sure hand is seen in the pencil/graphite outlining." At this stage of his career Mucha designed images based on photographs he had taken of models in his studio. Several photographs exist of young women in the poses seen in this drawing (Mucha p. 120). Ainslee's was a literary and artistic monthly review published in New York, London and Paris.
